"No two days are the same, you're always learning"

Saneet has worked at Sky Betting & Gaming for just over 3 years, he was promoted to Senior Software Engineer in the Bet Promotions Squad. Here’s his story:

TELL US ABOUT YOUR SKY BETTING & GAMING CAREER PATH

I joined as a Software Engineer in the Bet Promotions squad just over 3 years ago and have remained in the squad since. I have been a senior for 8 months now after applying for the vacant position in the team.

IN YOUR EYES, WHAT ARE THE TOP ATTRIBUTES NEEDED TO BECOME A SENIOR SOFTWARE ENGINEER?

  1. Someone who continuously learns – A good trait to have as a software engineer regardless of seniority is to always try and learn new things. It’s not about spending an entire day every weekend learning but doing a little bit regularly really does make a difference.
  2. Teamwork/mentoring – Part of your role being a senior is the responsibility to help others. I think it’s important to be a team player, share knowledge when you can, ensure you get others doing tasks they’ve not done before. By doing this you can build better systems and at the same time you help other engineers get better at their job.
  3. Someone who is adaptable – Don’t say no to something because you don’t know how to do it, or you’re not experienced enough. Try to get stuck into a task/challenge, this is how you grow as an individual. It’s okay if it doesn’t go well the first time, but you have more knowledge and experience the next time you do it.

HOW HAS SKY BETTING & GAMING SUPPORTED YOUR CAREER PROGRESSION TO SENIOR SOFTWARE ENGINEER?

Sky Betting & Gaming (SBG) has supported my progression to senior in a few ways, first and foremost I’d probably start by talking about the varied projects I’ve been able to work on. In these projects I’ve been able to hone my skills using a variety of technologies that I don’t think I would have used elsewhere. This has 100 percent made me a better engineer as I’m more experienced at my craft and I am better equipped at dealing with challenges.

SBG has also allowed me to work with some great people who have had a big influence on me becoming a senior, especially in the early days of me starting when I had limited experience. My manager and other engineers in the team were always there to answer questions and give assistance when needed, I certainly wouldn’t have progressed as much without them.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF BEING AN ENGINEER WITH US?

No two days are the same, you’re always learning something new which enables you to grow. I was really young in terms of my career experience when I arrived at SBG, but I’ve come on leaps and bounds comparing myself from then to now. I’m stronger at my mastery and know how to handle problems and that’s only because of the opportunities/work that SBG offers.
